Back by popular demand, Sarah Van Buren (SVB) returns via Shaker Museum to facilitate another Youth DJ Workshop for ages 9 – 16. This four-day intensive will include a series of studio days with a final performance when our newly trained DJs take the stage for the whole community to enjoy. Participants will gain knowledge and skills related to analog music-making, a collection of their own vinyl records, and a chance to take home their own record player (based on workshop attendance).

Today’s kids are instantly attracted to the idea of DJing. Although that usually means swiping around on a smart phone or clicking around on a computer, the origins of DJing are very analog. Kids who learn and practice DJing with vinyl records (including all kinds of sound experimentation therein) develop fine motor skills and learn about musical concepts such as rhythm, melody, tempo, and pitch. This workshop is open-ended, encapsulating all genres of music and sound experimentation. It may lead to dancing, it may lead to grooving, it may lead to an “aha!” thinking moment. It will definitely lead to collaboration and cooperation as kids share equipment, music, and ideas. Overall, we’re all along for the ride, because it’s going to be really fun.

The United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (a.k.a. Shakers) were a Christian utopian community that arrived in the Hudson Valley nearly 250 years ago. Spreading as far west as Ohio and as far south as Florida, Shakers made important contributions to religious thought, progressive causes, music, craft, agriculture, and industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. A Shaker community still exists in Sabbathday Lake, ME, today).

Music was central to their communities, and they were known colloquially as “Shakers” because of their worship through intense dancing and song. They were also early adopters of technology, such as this crystal radio that Brother Irving Greenwood built (with purchased headphones!) more than 100 years ago, which are a part of Shaker Museum’s collection.

Shaker Museum stewards the most comprehensive collection of Shaker objects and archives in the world and is currently building its future location in Chatham, NY.

The ArtEast May Studios Tour, formally known as ArtmostNY Open Studio Tour, is a group of working artists who will be opening their studio doors for two very busy days in May during which you can visit while they work. This event offers a rare opportunity to step inside the working studios of some of New York's talented and innovative artists whose studios are right here in eastern Dutchess County. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists, ask questions, and learn about their techniques and inspirations. Each artist will be working on a project that shows what it’s like to work in that medium.

Opening Reception for "Outside the Box" on May 4, 2024 from 1-4pm with guest artists Ian Maracle, Margaret Jacobs, and Paulette Moore.

"Outside the Box" features the innovative expressions of 10 Iroquois/Haudenosaunee artists who are pioneering new ground and new spaces. Work by installation artist Hannah Claus, photojournalist Ian Maracle, video game creator Waylon Wilson, neo-burlesque dancer Lauren Jiles, metalsmith Margaret Jacobs, animator Paulette Moore, luthier Glenn Hill, Jr., contemporary dancer Santee Smith, and the Iroquois Marching Band.

Seaside Pumpkins are a New York City-based electro folk pop duo consisting of Jannek Zechner & Natalie Mack. This melodious pair draws you into their world with songs that tell stories straight from the heart, ringing poetic and true.

Natalie makes theater & music with and for kids, at venues ranging from Lincoln Center, to the rainforests of Tasmania. Jannek is an Emmy-Award winning composer, producer & mixing engineer, working alongside legends like Tony Visconti & Elvis Costello. Weekly live improvised ambient music featuring David and Kenji Garland, Dan Kirkhus, Jimmy Garver, Rodney Greenblat and guest performers. Enjoy coffee and breakfast while floating on a cushion of ambient sound by adventurous musicians.

Every Monday at 7:30 p.m. No previous singing experience is required. For most of us, our voice is our most important medium of expression. With this voice we can sing, we can praise, we can express joy or pain, and we can teach. But often, our relationship with our voice becomes disconnected. We underestimate the effect our voice has on our bodies and our lives. This workshop is a doorway into reconnecting with your voice and expressing yourself more fully. Through a series of simple tones, or notes sung for long periods, we gently begin to observe the relationships between the voice, the body, the breath, and the self. This workshop is not affiliated with any spiritual practice. All people are welcome, and no singing experience is required. There is a short introduction and instruction, followed by 30 minutes of a guided toning series, and open discussion afterward (optional). Open to the public, but donations are graciously accepted.
